The Horseman's
Edge
“The Horseman’s Edge” is in its first year of airing on RFD-
TV. It is hosted by one of the most recognized trainer in the
performance horse industry, JD Yates. JD Yates has an
unlimited number of awards and titles, including 26 AQHA
World Championships with two Super Horse Titles, 22 time
National Finals Rodeo qualifier, 8 time Mountain states
PRCA team roper and 5 time Mountain states PRCA All-
around champion. JD has owned, trained and showed
multiple champions including the junior All Round horse
and the senior all around horse.
JD Yates started his horse training experience on the rodeo
trail. JD roped heels behind his dad, Dick Yates at the age of
14. They spent many hours on the road, traveling to rodeos
and jackpots. The days werelong, keeping horses tuned and
ready to haul, plus JD had to fit in time for school. He is one
of the youngest cowboys to qualify for the National Finals
Rodeo, at the age of 15. JD qualified eleven separate times
for the National Finals Rodeo with his dad. He furthered his
education at college, competing in college rodeos and wining
two college championships.
JD loves rodeos, meeting new people and seeing different
country.People that knowhim, knows he loves to talk. After
years chasing rodeos, he chose to spend more time horseback
and to do that he had to spend less time
driving. That is when
JD decided
to start
showing
his own horse in the American Quarter Horse Association. This is
when he won his first world championship. His experience
from roping in the rodeos, allowed him the opportunity to
help several people around the shows. He really enjoyed
helping his fellow cowgirl/cowboy with problems with their
horse or their loop.
When at home, JD was always training on a horse for heeling
or calf roping. His father, Dick, would be training the
heading horses. It gradually evolved into a major business, as
outside people would ask the duo to train their horses. They
built a showbarn for the customer’shorses that is heated, with
lights to keep them slick and shiny for the shows. JD Yates
turned his training and showability into a business,
“Hitchrack Performance Horses”. This business is a true
family affair. His father, Dick, which got him started with a
wealth of knowledge, also shoes all the horses as well as assists
in the arena. His mother, Jan, is behind the scene taking care
of the business. Kelly, JD’s sister, is a four-time NFR qualifier
in barrel racing. JD’spride and joy, his son Trey, is practicing
his roping, while being active in football, baseball and
wrestling.
JD is currently training several horses, for the showarena and
the rodeo trail. He loves performance horses and the
competition. Therehave been several articles written about
JD and his views on training, saddles, bits, horses
and cattle. He has released two instructional
DVDs “Starting the Heading Horse, with
JD Yates”and “Starting the Heeling
Horse with JD Yates”.
JD’s current project “The Horseman’s Edge” is a true
inspiration of heart. He is able to take years of expertise and
knowledge and compile them into useful tips for the viewers
to use in their own arenas. JD also has had the awesome
opportunity to meet world-class trainers all across the nation
in various performance classes. These world-class trainers will
highlight different aspects of performances horses throughout
the season on “The Horseman’s Edge”. “The Horseman’s
Edge” started off the season at the “DLR Ranch”, showing the
process for ultra sounding mares and artificial insemination at
the Stallion Station. The second show was tips on starting a
heeling horse during the first 6 months of training. Shows
three and four were on starting a heading horse, and all the
necessary steps that must be taken to get your horse started
correctly so they will last you a long time. Show 5, which is
week 5; JD teams up with Don Murphy, one of the most
successful and respected Working Cow Horse trainers in the
industry. Kelly Yates, JD’s sister, joins JD for show 6 to share
techniques on training a world champion barrel horse. JD
then travels to California to meet up with Paul Jones, an
AQHA Race Horse Trainer for show 7. Show 8 will highlight
Bob Avala, the number one Reining horse trainer in America.
JD will discuss bitting a horse with the top bit maker in the
United States, Benny Guitron, for show 9. On show ten,
Rich Skelton, 8-time world champion heeler, will join JD.
JD’s expertise as well as the expertise of some of his closest
friends makes “The Horseman’s Edge” the most unique and informative show for the avid horseman. Each week, the
viewers will be allowed the opportunity to learn from the best
in the performance horse industry. Be sure and tune in to
“The Horseman’s Edge, with JD Yates” on RFD-TV.
