COVID-19 is not the only virus the pork industry needs to be concerned with; in China there continues to be an outbreak of African Swine Fever. There are no reported cases to date of ASF in the United States; however, ASF could have a huge effect if not contained within a few years.
With China facing the ASF issue, the American pork industry may see and increase in demand for their product. The National Pork Board says that producers will be able to meet this demand, even with the coronavirus pandemic still underway.
There is no clear information or data on how much ASF has affected the Chinese pork industry but it has been roughly estimated to have slashed the Chinese heard by nearly half; ASF has been reported in over ten countries.
