The livestock markets are still afraid of another potential shutdown, which would cause demand to drop.
They traded lower overnight. The national spike in cases is a threat to meat packing plants, as several were forced to shut down last spring due to outbreaks among workers.
However, there may be relief coming soon. Pfizer says that it will apply for FDA “emergency use” authorization today.
Once it is approved, Pfizer says that distribution will begin within hours.
Meat packers are anxiously awaiting the news to see where they fall in line on the distribution schedule. Several food worker groups have asked Washington to prioritize the industry to keep the food supply chain secure.
