We want to take a look at the immediate actions signed by the President that will directly impact agriculture and rural America.
President Biden immediately rejoined the Paris Climate Accord. That action rolls back some of President Donald Trump’s environmental regulations. He also revoked the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.
He is asking the Department of Education to extend the pause on student loan payments through September, and he is directing USDA to extend the eviction and foreclosure moratorium through March.
Biden also unveiled an illegal immigration proposal.
Eligible workers would have to pass a criminal background check. They would get immediate legal status if they show they have worked in ag at least 100 days in four of the last five years. They would also get the same overtime pay as other farm workers. The measure is supported by several trade groups, including the United Farm Workers and United Fresh Produce Association.
While President-elect, Biden gathered a COVID response task force that will report directly to him. He is calling for better protection for front-line workers. In theory, that would apply to meat-packers.
He also plans to double the amount of inspectors at OSHA, and with an emergency temporary standard, they will have more firepower behind them.
