The White House Office of Management and Budget wants to change the definition of metro and non-metro counties.
This could have big implications for rural America.
The changes would move 255 counties from metro status to non-metro status, adding 18 million residents to rural America. That means those counties would be open to government grants and other funding reserved for small-town communities, making the pot of money smaller for current communities.
Outlets, like The Daily Yonder, uses the non-metro definition to determine which counties are rural.
