U.S. dairy is pushing back against Mexico’s plan for trade barriers on cheese.
Mexico is working on new standards that would make it harder and more expensive for Americans to ship cheese. Mexico says that it is trying to keep out products made with cheap ingredients, like vegetable oil.
Some dairy groups support the effort, but International Dairy Foods Association says that it is concerning because Mexico does not require the same level of product testing.
Its latest definition of cheese goes against the spirit of the USMCA.
National Milk Producers Federation wrote a letter to Mexico’s Economy Minister saying, “We strongly believe that the existence of open and fair trade is the basis for the prosperity and growth of our two countries, especially in sectors such as dairy, where there are synergies, complementaries and an opportunity for common growth.”
