New research shows just how devastating the pandemic was to American restaurants.
Market research firm Dataessential says that 10 percent of restaurants have permanently closed in the last year. That translates to more than 625,000 restaurants.
Not surprisingly, the larger chains with 500 or more restaurants fared the best.
The data also shows that cuisine matters. 15 percent of French restaurants boarded up, the worst category in ethnic food. As for location, Washington DC had the most permanent closures, at 15 percent.
Idaho fared best with 7.5 percent.
