Twenty states are now asking the Supreme Court to weigh in on California’s Prop-12.
The states say that California should not be able to enact a law, and then expect the rest of the country to go along with it.
A federal court upheld the law earlier this year.
Prop-12 sets strict animal welfare standards for California, but it bans the sale of out-of-state animals that are not raised by the same standards.
Historically, the Supreme Court has ruled these laws violate the Constitution’s commerce clause, but it should be noted, the court denied reviewing a similar case in 2010 regarding California’s strict requirements for egg-laying hens.
