Pork producers have been meeting their federal legislators this week to discuss their top policy concerns.
Trade tops the list, with Vietnam considered one of the top near-term export opportunities. NPPC President Jen Sorenson says that the industry faces major tariff and non-tariff barriers that prevent access to Vietnam’s pork market.
“Domestic pork consumption in Vietnam is greater than 2.5 million metric tons per year, yet last year it only imported 25,000 metric tons of U.S. pork,” Sorenson states. “Our producers have been asking members of Congress to work with the U.S. Trade Representative to enhance Vietnamese market access for U.S. pork.”
The council says that there is bipartisan support for this on the Hill and it is optimistic policymakers are taking the request seriously.
