The Biden administration announced plans to re-list the lesser prairie chicken. The battle over the small grouse has raged for more than 20 years.
It was taken off the Endangered Species List in 2015, but activists filed suit the following year.
This week’s announcement from U.S. Fish and Wildlife comes as a response to the five-year lawsuit. The public will have 60 days to comment on the proposal and two virtual meetings will be held in July.
Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas expressed frustration saying re-listing would “hurt our state’s economy, hinder our oil and gas independence, increase utility costs, and prevent the development of renewable energy in prime western Kansas locations.”
