The National Pork Producers Council is reacting to African swine fever in the Dominican Republic.
Here is a statement from the Chief Veterinarian at the NPPC, Liz Wagstrom:
“The United States has significantly bolstered biosecurity to protect the U.S. swine herd since ASF broke in China nearly three years ago and began spreading to other parts of the world. We are thankful for steps taken by the USDA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection...”
Those steps include increasing inspections on all domestic flights from the DR.
Also, NPPC issued a series of measures U.S. pork producers should be taking right now. They include:
Learning where your hog feed comes from; visit with your suppliers to discuss the origin of the ingredients
Reviewing your biosecurity protocols
- Filling out USDA’s checklist for Foreign Animal Disease Preparation and enrolling in the Secure Pork Supply Program
