In one corner of the northeast they are growing plants in a warehouse instead of a field and taking production to a commercial level.
AeroFarms built an indoor operation that produces food locally using a technology called “aeroponics”. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of the spectrum.
Spokesperson Roger Buelow says that consumers can still get the same nutrition even though the plants are grown inside.
“Those knobs that we turn have to do with the lights, the air temperature, the air flow, in order to have that plant to experience this perfect environment for it to really amplify the particular vitamin. In order to give that plant everything it can,” he explains.
AeroFarms is located in Newark, New Jersey and grows 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world.
