The SNAP program has been a large talking point when it comes to negotiating the new Farm Bill. New data from USDA shows just how many residents rely on the program.
Just last year, around 42 million people relied on SNAP benefits each month, which is more than 10 percent of the U.S. population, but participation varies greatly by state. Benefits range from 23 percent in places like New Mexico to as low as 5 percent in Utah.
Places like Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Oregon, and Washington DC all have more than 15 percent of their population using SNAP benefits.
