Mexico has remained committed to their ban on genetically-modified corn, but one policy expert says it could be overturned before the year is over.
Nancy Martinez with the National Corn Growers Association tells Brownfield Ag News a lot of progress was made during talks back in June. The NCGA remains confident that Mexico’s decree violates the USMCA. If Mexico’s decree is allowed to stand, the country plans to phase out GMO corn by the end of the year. Martinez says such a move would be disastrous for U.S. corn producers. She also worries other countries would follow their lead.
More than 90 percent of corn grown in the U.S. is genetically-modified.
