Agribusiness leaders struggle trying to prove food safety to consumers

Food safety is always top of mind for U.S. farmers and ranchers, but agribusiness leaders say it can be challenging to prove that to consumers.

“Most consumers don’t understand how where their food comes from or how it is raised. And there’s certainly a lot of options out there if someone is concerned with how it is raised, there’s always organic or non-GMO or all sorts of labels out there, but you know, our conventionally grown food doesn’t need additional labels. People just want affordable, safe food, and frankly, we have the safest and cheapest food in the world. Part of that is because of we registered these products and the science that’s behind them,” said Ben Gleason.

Other producers are dealing with the same challenges, saying food transparency is key.

“Consumers today wanted to know more about where their food is coming from. They want to know the ingredients they’re putting in their body. They want to know who’s grown. That is no longer a nice to have. It is table stakes. Therefore all the companies and the food and agricultural space are trying to figure out how to tell the consumers more about where their food comes from. Food transparency is a thing, and it’s not going away,” said Scott Nelson.

To help with consumer trust, Nelson developed “Make Hay,” which is a platform telling stories of America’s ag industry, allowing consuemrs to see where their food comes from.
