Extreme weather played a major role in the number of vegetable losses this year in California and Florida.
A hot summer made for inhospitable growing conditions for crops like carrots, celery, and cauliflower.
USDA estimates more than $22 million dollars in crop losses took place this year in California alone.
That is a third higher than last year, and nearly two-thirds higher than the five year average.
Florida’s vegetable production was also hit hard by Hurricane Helene and Milton.
The University of Florida estimates Helene alone caused up to $38 million dollars in losses to Florida vegetable producers.
