Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, died this past weekend at the age of 31.

He held the Guinness World Record for being the world’s oldest dog. He defied the odds last year by turning 30, but he celebrated his 31st birthday earlier this year.

Leonal Costa, the owner, tells Guinness that Bobi was lucky to be alive because his father was a hunter with many dogs and did not want to keep the litter that Bobi was a part of.

The previous record holder for the oldest dog ever was Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who lived to be 29 years old in 1939.
