Last year, we introduced you to Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, which is a breed of livestock guardian dog that have a life expectancy of 14 years. He defied the odds last year by turning 30, but he just celebrated his 31st birthday this past weekend.

Guinness World Records recently announced that Bobi is the world’s oldest living dog.

Leonal Costa, the owner, tells Guinness that Bobi is lucky to be alive because his father was a hunter with many dogs and did not want to keep the litter that Bobi was a part of.

Costa planned a big birthday party for Bobi on Saturday at his home in the rural Portuguese village of Conqueiros, where Bobi has lived his entire life, and says it will be a “very traditional” Portuguese party. “More than 100 people” were due to attend the party; many of them flown in from foreign countries specially for the occasion, according to Guinness World Records.
