Bovine tuberculosis, a chronic respiratory disease in cattle, has been confirmed in a steer from South Dakota that was at a Wisconsin packing plant.
South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson says the infected steer was identified during a routine inspection in late October. The infection was confirmed last week by the National Veterinary Surveillance Laboratory.
The state is now working with the USDA to trace the steer’s original herd. Dr. Thompson says Bovine TB poses no threat to food safety.
