Farmers are receiving payments from the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program and some states and sectors are benefiting more than others. The top five states are Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois, and Kansas.
In Wisconsin, the dairy sector will receive the most at almost $80 million dollars. In the other four states, farmers of non-specialty crops, like corn, soybeans, and also livestock, collect the majority.
Overall, livestock producers receive 48 percent of total payments so far. Non-specialty crops and the dairy industry take home about one quarter of the payments each, and specialty crops, such as fruits, nuts and vegetables, claim 2 percent of the total.
