Canadian officials are keeping a close eye on Trump’s tariff threats

While President-elect Trump has made clear that tariffs will be a big part of his new Administration, officials in Canada are warning additional tariffs could be costly for American fuel bills.

“From the Alberta perspective, under no circumstances will Alberta agree to cut off oil and gas exports. We don’t support tariffs. All it does is make life more expensive for everyday Canadians and everyday Americans. The analysis we’ve seen is that a 25 percent tariff would add a dollar a gallon to every gallon of gasoline that Americans purchase. And when I mentioned that to all the Governors I spoke with, their eyes went wide,” said Francois Leageau.

Other Canadian leaders did not mince words. They say an across the board embargo on energy exports is an option but should be a last resort.

“It’s going to be unaffordable for Americans to buy electricity. We are sending a message to the U.S.: ‘You come and attack Canadians, then we’re going to use every tool in our toolbox to defend.’ It is a last resort, and let’s hope that never comes. Let’s hope we can get through this trade deal,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

Just last week, Canada’s Finance Minister stepped away from the role after disagreements within their own government on how to respond to Trump’s tariff plan.
