Herman Boone, the legendary high school football coach played by Denzel Washington in the movie Remember the Titans has died at the age of 84.
Boone began coaching at T.C. Williams High School in Virginia in 1971. It was the first year the high schools in Alexandria, Virginia were integrated. The Titans would go undefeated and win the state championship.
In 1971 President Richard Nixon was quoted as saying the Titans were, “the team that saved the city of Alexandria”
Bill Yoast, an assistant coach under Boone died in may at the age of 94. Yoast was a coach at an all white school before working alongside Boone when Alexandria integrated high schools in 1971.
