Lawmakers are at a standoff with America’s farmers caught in the middle. The debate centers around emergency aid, and farm groups are asking ag lawmakers to hold their ground.
Congress has until Friday to pass a short-term government spending bill or risk a shutdown. However, plans right now do not include any emergency aid for farmers, potentially leaving as much as $12 billion on the table.
Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall is asking lawmakers representing major ag states to oppose any bills that do not provide help for farmers.
“Nearly 80% of Americans believe lawmakers should prioritize legislation that supports farmers and ranchers so it’s just plain unacceptable that our elected leaders are considering putting politics first. I hope reasonable members of Congress take a stand for the good folks who stock their pantries.”
Congressional ag leaders GT Thompson and John Boozman also released a joint statement, saying failure to include farmer assistance will have devastating consequences on farmers and rural communities. Both chambers are in session this week as they work to meet the Friday deadline.
