Costa Rica has renewed its commitment to sustainable banana production

After 30 years of efforts, Costa Rica is renewing its commitment to sustainable banana production.

The country signed a new series of undertakings to grow bananas in an environmentally responsible way. It includes reducing industrial water consumption, reducing and replacing industrial plastics, and managing agrochemicals safely for both the environment and people.

Since 1992, Costa Rica has recycled all plastics used in banana production, water usage at packing plans has been cut by 80 to 90 percent, and almost 70 percent of the farms are carbon neutral.

Last year, the U.S. imported more than $10 billion pounds of bananas with Costa Rica being one of the biggest marketplaces.
