Howard Buffett is one of the world’s most prominent philanthropists. He also happens to be the sheriff of Decatur, Illinois, a midwestern town reeling from the opioid epidemic. Determined to try and alleviate the suffering he sees all around him, Howard teams up with a group of local healthcare providers to build an innovative recovery center that will work with the county jail to break the devastating cycle of addiction. As the new center undergoes construction, Crossing follows Howard on a journey to the Mexican border to learn more about the drug trade and chronicles two Decatur women’s roller-coaster struggle with their substance use disorder. The film is both a clear-eyed look at the complexities of addiction and recovery and a surprising portrait of one man’s efforts to help his struggling community.
