Cultivating Excellence: Mississippi Farm Bureau recognizes a lifetime of agricultural leadership

Awarded the 2023 Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation Excellence and Leadership Award, V.O. Campbell’s journey is a testament to a lifetime dedicated to the well-being of farmers and the agricultural community.

In Covington County, leadership in agriculture has found a stalwart advocate in V.O. Campbell. His leadership style has always been characterized by a willingness to step forward, whether at the farm level, county level, or state level. His commitment to doing what is right for farmers resonates through every aspect of his life. Long before the establishment of a County Farm Bureau office, Campbell emerged as the voice of agriculture in Covington County.

Recalling the early days, Campbell reminisces about the humble beginnings of Farm Bureau in Covington County—a small office in a warehouse where essential farm supplies were sold. Despite the challenges, Campbell recognized the significance of Farm Bureau as the lifeblood and the vital link between farmers and both state and federal governments.

Campbell’s impact extended beyond the local level. Around 1990, as poultry farming gained momentum in Covington County, Campbell took a leading role in addressing the challenges faced by contract poultry growers. Threatened by mounting regulations, Campbell united growers to advocate for better contracts and fair wages, becoming a crucial advocate for the entire poultry industry.

Beyond poultry, Campbell’s leadership touched various arenas, serving on the Southeast Mississippi Economic Development Council, the Mississippi Water Board, and the National Resource Conservation Service. His involvement aimed to support fellow farmers and address the broader issues affecting agriculture.
