Winter is arriving in parts of the Midwest.
Iowa’s state climatologist says that the winter weather has even brought some snow with more potentially on the way.
According to Justin Glisan, “If we look at the outlooks, we are trending colder than average over the next six to ten and eight to fourteen days, so up to two weeks from now. There is some semblance of some systems coming through with a wetter look in those outlooks as well, but nothing significant that we’re seeing at least right now. Looking like more of a southern system across Missouri and more of the lower part of the Midwest getting into Thanksgiving. So, nothing appreciable that we’re seeing in the outlooks, in fact, small changes of some rainfall across the state.”
This winter weather is going to stick around, Glisan shares where soil temperatures currently stand.
“We’ve seen soil temperatures at the four-inch level still hovering in the low 50s, upper 40s just in the last several days. Now this cold air outbreak with some moisture in the ground, we won’t see the temperatures dive appreciably, but we’ll definitely see those soil temperatures get below 50 and stay in the 40s,” he explains. “So, overall, we do expect this cold air this time of year. You look at the bomb cyclone in the Pacific Northwest in the atmospheric river that’s bringing in a lot of moisture. We’re luckily not a part of that wave train. It’s staying more north and south of us, so a more quiet forecast over the next seven days, but definitely cold.”
