Del Monte plans to shut down its packing plant in Mendota, Illinois.
The facility built in 1949 packs peas, carrots, corn, lima beans, and other vegetables. This is the latest round of closures following recalls and sanitary violations. The plant will officially close in June of 2020. Layoffs include 550 seasonal workers and 30 full-time employees. Community leaders say the shutdown could impact the local economy.
