Dockworkers’ union at East and Gulf Coast ports walk away from negotiating table with employers

Labor negotiations at some of the nation’s largest ports are once again front and center. It comes a little more than a month after a strike ended at East and Gulf Coast ports.

The International Longshoreman’s Association had agreed to a temporary restart early last month after weeks of negotiations, but that deal is only good through mid-January.

Now, the union has confirmed they have walked away from the negotiating table once again. They claim port owners are pushing automation, which was a major sticking point during the last set of negotiations.

The U.S. Maritime Alliance says no jobs would be cut because of automation.
