FHIR: Nebraska town embraces data innovations to transform patient care

I Love Rural Health takes us to Gothenburg, Nebraska, to see how this small-town hospital harnesses the power of data informatics to transform patient care.

Data is power, literally. Adopting informatics in the health sector has been a slow burn, especially for rural hospitals.

“One of the ways Gothenburg Health uses FHIR, more specifically, is by connecting our EHR to a population health tool that we use,” explains Tina Therion. “It allows us to take the data directly from the EHR, gather it in a meaningful way for our providers, and create this document that they use at the beginning of every visit, which keeps all of the patient’s key information in front of them so that we don’t miss anything at their primary care visits.”

Using data in healthcare provides a holistic view of patient’s needs and helps provide quality care. It also addresses workforce shortages, population decline, brain drain, and broadband disparities in rural healthcare.
