The nation’s highways are often colorless trails full of tail lights and busy commuters. But the Georgia Department of Transportation is trying to change that look with some help from the state’s pollinators.
The idea to change the appearance of transportation corridors actually began with Ladybird Johnson. In 1965, she discovered there were more than 16,000 junkyards along U.S. highways. The former First Lady then took it upon herself to lobby Congress to beautify those systems. Just three years later, her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, signed 50 laws around conservation and beautification.
