Winter weather is already taking over parts of farm country this year, and with it comes a handful of logistical challenges, including transportation.
“Making sure that you’re on time for loading and clearing any snow away from the loading area if it’s necessary before the truck arrives to avoid any sort of delays. I’d also recommend you make sure you have proper help available to make that loading process a little bit quicker. One person loading is never ideal. So if possible, producers may be able to mark or sort your pigs ahead of time to reduce the amount of time needed to load the truck, and thus the amount of time that the animals being transported would be exposed to the cold weather,” said Stephanie Wetter.
It is also a good time to look at barn ventilation. Wetter says checking for air leaks is often a good way to ensure the animals stay comfortable during the winter months.
