Local farms could help eliminate single-use plastics

Scientists have long been searching for ways to reduce or eliminate single-use plastics, with several states setting up their own regulations. However, some researchers argue they need more federal dollars, and local farms could play a role in the research.

The Animal Digestible Food Packaging Initiative hopes to one day eliminate plastics from landfills, but they say most research now comes from private funding, and infrastructure is lacking. They are looking at ag products, like mushrooms, to replace Styrofoam food containers.

They hope products can one day be digestible by animals, bacteria, yeasts, and fungi on local farms.
