Melting Data: Americans have not eaten as much ice cream in the past several years

A hot day can usually feel better with a big scoop of ice cream, but new data shows Americans are cutting back on their frozen dairy intake.

The consumption of sweet treats like ice cream and frozen yogurt has been falling since the 90s. In 2021, Americans took in just over 20 pounds of frozen dairy products per capita. In 2000, that number was about 26 pounds.

The Economic Research Service shows the downward trends line up with a fall in the consumption of caloric sweeteners. However, this data does not take spoilage or waste into account.
