Mexico Backs Down: Why they’ll likely overturn their import ban on biotech corn

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she will rescind the country’s ban on biotech corn imports. It comes just days after a dispute panel found Mexico violated the USMCA, but there are more steps they are looking to take.

Agri-Pulse reports Sheinbaum is calling on lawmakers there to codify the prohibition of domestic biotech corn. In a speech over the weekend, she said no genetically modified corn will be planted in Mexico to protect biodiversity.

The three-person USMCA panel ruled in favor of the U.S., saying Mexico’s ban was not based on science. Mexico only had 45 days from the ruling to fall in line before we could begin taking retaliatory action.
