Migration season could trigger more HPAI cases, ag leaders warn

Wild birds are beginning to migrate for the winter, and that means an added threat of High Path Avian Flu cases.

The virus has had a grip on the ag industry since the outbreak began in the poultry section in early 2022, and it has led to the culling of millions of birds and has taken a toll on producers. Officials say wild bird migration has played a role in the spread, and as migration season starts across parts of the nation, ag leaders warn producers to be vigilant.

The virus shifted earlier this year to dairy cattle, hitting more than 200 herds in 14 states. Researchers at Kansas State University are now one step closer to understanding its spread. They found milk and milking procedures are the most likely routes of transmission. Researchers say this highlights the need for biosecurity measures, especially as more birds make their way across fields this fall.

The Dairy Industry Conference Call is happening next week. It is an opportunity for industry colleagues to discuss issues like HPAI and how other farmers are working around it. The Department of Agriculture will be on the call, and they are expected to share updates on the situation.
