Minnesota’s dairy industry had a tough 2023 with losing almost 150 dairies

The state of Minnesota lost almost 150 dairies in 2023.

The already-shrinking dairy sector lost another 58 dairy farm permits in November, bringing the total lost to 146 last year. The Minnesota Milk Producers Association says its typical to see shut downs from October through December, but the Executive Director has not seen more than 50 in a single month in quite some time.

10 years ago, Minnesota had more than 4,000 dairies, and now, the state is home to just 1,800. The decline can be attributed to high input costs and low commodity values.
