Mississippi River levels are still dangerously low for post-harvest traffic

Barge traffic along some of the nation’s most important ag shipping corridors is still in jeopardy, leaving farmers in a bad spot with harvest nearly complete.

Right now, the Mississippi River is below threshold marks in several key areas, which has led to draft and tow size restrictions. Officials warn if the situation gets worse, more restrictions could be put in place.

Rain is expected to cross portions of farm country later this week, but officials say it might not be enough to move river levels where they need to be.
