Lamb producers will have a new packing facility to choose from this summer.
Three established sheep producing families have invested in a new lamb processing plant in Brush, Colorado. It is expected to come online in late June or July.
One of the investors, Harper Feeds, says that it will be interesting to see how competition reacts, but overall, they are just looking to improve efficiency since a new lamb facility has not opened since the 1980s.
“So, we felt that the industry here in the west needed another facility, modern, up-to-date, sized to the industry. We can capture some inefficiencies, that is our hope,” Mike Harper said. “Also, one of the reasons that we’re going this direction is the guys that were buying carcasses from the two existing plants were competing with them in the market place on the cuts sales. So, we felt like maybe we’d have a comfortable fit with some of the carcass buyers.”
Harper says that they have launched a website which has had positive feedback and there seems to be a lot of people excited about the opportunity to do something different.
