North Carolina Christmas trees survived Hurricane Helene but looking for consumer support

The Carolinas are home to some of America’s most beautiful Christmas tree farms. While most of those farms survived Hurricane Helene, the storm took out a lot of critical infrastructure.

“There’s some farmers that, you know, had more losses than others. I mean, I had a barn that washed away that my grandfather built, but we got most of our equipment moved, you know, in as far as tractors and trailers that we haul the trees on in vehicles. We did lose a couple vehicles, but they were older, and so it’s going to be a challenge. I mean, every day, we’re making progress,” said Larry Smith.

The North Carolina Christmas Tree Association says despite the devastation nearby, they are not expecting a big impact on the supply of North Carolina Fraser Firs.

Growers are still assessing the damage, but say a good way to support a farmer this Christmas season is to buy their trees.
