Most fields are quiet this time of year, but that means it is time to make some noise in the shop. System engineers with GSI say now is a good time to start knocking out the post-harvest checklist.
“This time of year, when you’re done, you need to go over everything that you can, that you have access to there, make sure all your equipment is in good working order so you’re ready to go for next year, or if you have to unload anything or reclaim some grain. Check all your belts and the chain tension on your conveyors. Make sure your pit is good and cleaned out. If you have a sump pump, make sure it’s working to prevent any moisture from gathering in the bottom of the pit. Check the bearings as well. So, when you do have to use this equipment, it is good to go. Check your liners on everything to make sure they’re not worn out and you have holes anywhere. You also want to look at your belt and buckets on your grain bucket elevators, and the actual drive belts themselves to make sure they’re tight and not dry-rotted,” said Dave Ellis.
Ellis says bins need special attention, and you want to make sure your unloads are open so nothing can enter and sit in there over the winter.
