David Henderson has a genuine passion for ranching, and he says there is no other job or lifestyle for him. Henderson’s journey resonates with a love for farming that transcends generations. In this story of growth, dedication, and legacy, we get a glimpse into the life of a man who has made it his mission to cultivate his cattle as well as a profound connection to the land he calls home.
“I’ve always wanted to be in agriculture ever since I was a kid,” Henderson said. “I mean, to me, when you’re growing something that you know somebody’s going to be happy to eat, it’s satisfaction that you know you’re doing something right and somebody’s happy with what you’re growing.”
After graduating from Prairie View A&M University, Henderson embarked on a remarkable journey with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for 34 years. There, his academic and professional pursuits converged, offering him a unique vantage point where theory met practice. This experience equipped him with a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between conservation and cultivation.
Over the years, Henderson’s passion for agriculture evolved into a thriving cattle operation. Starting with just two cows on his parent’s property, he gradually scaled his venture into a successful cow-calf operation. Crossbred cows formed the heart of his herd, expertly curated to match the terrain and market demands of the region. Later, the addition of Angus Bulls introduced a new dimension to his ranch, marrying tradition with innovation.
“I think what it takes to make a really good cattle rancher is you have to have it in your heart,” he said. “And as long as you got it in your heart, you can make things work out for you.”
Henderson’s journey extended beyond the fields and the ranch. His dedication led him to serve on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association board, an entity responsible for managing funds allocated through the Beef Checkoff. As a rancher intimately familiar with the industry’s challenges and triumphs, Henderson has continued to lend his voice and expertise to ensure funds are allocated toward direct initiatives that genuinely uplift the cattle business.
