Farmers say periods of heavy rain and flooding are causing disease concerns.
According to Blake Miller, an Agronomic Service Rep with Sygneta, “There was a lot of May-planted corn that growers will lose sight of the May-planted corn crop, which, if tar spot, usually coming in late August, early September, that crop could be in the yield development stage, right, the grain fill stage, about middle of the way through, and could really be impacted by tar spot. Tar spot is the one that I’m really focused on now, mostly because of this temperature decline and some things recently have come out of academia that the temperature piece has really become more important, and we’re really riding in that rolling average. That’s the one I’m targeting there, and then I think in the soybean space, frogeye leaf spot is a major concern.”
Miller says that if you are concerned about these diseases, take action ahead of time with fungicide applications.
