Nashville’s own Jelly Roll, also known as Jason DeFord, is changing the name of country music, and showing how open and evolving the industry is. He has been making music for years, and has blended genres from Hip Hop, to rock, and now country.
He has written with big names like Brantley Gilbert and Ernest, who helped launch “Son Of A Sinner” to the number one spot.
The hit single gives a snapshot into Jelly Roll’s personal life as well as his struggles along the way. He wrote the single during a songwriting session at Nashville’s Sound Emporium in Jelly Roll fashion.
“I came in, sat down, picked up a guitar, they put a VoiceNote on, and I kind of spit out that chorus. We messed around with a verse for like 20 minutes, and then I left,” he told Billboard.
During the party, Jelly Roll gave a heartfelt speech to his co-writer, Ernest, speaking highly of his God-given talent.
Last year, Jelly Roll had an impressive sold-out crowd at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, with all of the proceeds going to building a music center for the local juvenile detention center.
“I wanna thank y’all for making this one of the biggest records of my life and with your help, this could be my first number one in country radio,” said Jelly Roll.
