Pasture lands across the United States are not escaping the drought this year. However, a beef specialist with the Iowa State University Extension says, that with proper management these lands can still thrive despite challenging conditions.
According to the specialist, having a pasture “to-do list” during these challenging times is very important. He recommends conducting an inventory and pasture condition evaluation to determine the current health of your acreage. Then, delay turnout and make sure there is enough land per livestock. Allowing at least three to four inches of pasture growth before cows graze them can help mitigate further damage.
He also recommends managing your nutrient levels, controlling weeds, and seeding when needed. Also, make sure to add new forages to maintain what you have.
“I just have a very hard time believing the federal government’s going to default on its own agreements...”
