Cherry growers in Michigan are facing a poor harvest this year.
Adverse weather led the state’s governor to propose a natural disaster declaration for the industry. Loss total estimates range from 30-75%, varying by variety.
However, the season’s struggles do not end there.
With pests and diseases impacting quality and yield as well, financial returns for growers are at stake. Some are describing the season as worse than in 2012 when the state’s entire crop was lost early in the season due to abnormally cold temperatures.
