As summer pushes on, harvest is already underway for some Wisconsin potato growers.
While it may be early, they knew it was the right time for their crop.
“We know the potato crop’s ready to be harvested based on some yield checks that we do throughout the season. But as time goes on, if you look at the field here, it’s starting to senesce down. The potatoes are starting to come to their end, and we’ll come out and do yield checks to see where we’re at. What the size of the potato is. The consumer wants a certain size potato out in the store for what they’re going to take home with them. Throughout the season, we’ll do checks, and once they hit a certain size, it’s all different based on what crop we’re raising,” said Jeff Huber.
Huber says harvest will be wrapped up in tow months. Once the temperature cools down, they will begin digging up russet potatoes.
