It was a gruesome scene in Eastern Kentucky as thirteen horses were shot and killed near a strip-mining site according to WYMT news in Kentucky. Among the horses shot some were only one year old or younger and others were pregnant.
Rescue groups at the site say it looks like the horses were hunted down and law enforcement say they were shot with a low caliber rifle.
Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt said, “This is very inhumane and it’s a very cruel act of somebody who just apparently had nothing else to do or whatever just to go back on a strip job and shoot down horses who were, one of them obviously was feeding, had grass in its mouth.”
At minimum, the person involved could face animal cruelty charges.
A $500 reward has been made available for information on the incident.
