Ranchers in the West continue to combat earlier-than-usual wildfires

Wildfires are taking a toll on ranchers out West as fire season is expected to reach its peak in mid-August.

Sabrina Maki and her family ranch on more than 74,000 acres east of Burns, Oregon, and she says it will take her family years to recover. They have now faced three separate fires on their property since the 4th of July, and according to Maki the land that their family typically grazes in the summer is now black.

A neighboring ranch family has likely lost several hundred head of cattle. While no official numbers on cattle losses have been released, the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association believes the number could be in the thousands.

Monetary donations, as well as pledges for hay, feed, or helping with the transportation of goods, are currently being accepted by organizations in the area. To learn more, click HERE.
