Soybean cyst nematodes are a thorn in the side of soybean producers. New research is putting the pest under the microscope to find out why some can bypass genetic resistance.
Using gene mapping, they are focusing in on the parasite’s reproductive abilities, and they are hoping to see why some of them are able to bypass the plant’s genetic resistance. They are also looking to better their testing, discover new varieties, and develop new defenses.
Soybean cyst nematodes cost farmers more than a billion dollars each year.
